Rod Parsley Pimping Via Direct Mail
Mr. Parsley How Much Money Do You Really Need?
New Orleans Bureau 02/21/2011

If you have ever made the mistake of contacting Rod Parsley Ministries then I really feel sorry for you. You’re probably now up to your neck in chain letters from his Breakthrough television broadcast which begs for money before you can even open the envelope.  Rod Parsley has succeeded in corrupting all of the innocence out of word “Covenant” with his repeated request that you become a Covenant Partner with his ministry.
I can remember as far back as 1995, Parsley was saturating Christian television with requests for Covenant Partners to help him spread the gospel. Covenant partners were and still are promised special access to Parsley’s inner circle if they would simply sow a seed of a specific dollar amount. This type of begging has gone on for years without anyone within the Body of Christ challenging this practice or even the validity of his claims, until now.

There is not one verse in the Bible where you will find Jesus asking born again believers to send specific dollar amounts in exchange for a blessing from God. Our Lord and Savior never charged any of the recipients of miracles a fee for receiving a blessing from God. If you needed sight, then Christ gave you sight for free. If you needed food then Christ never asked you to sow a seed in order to feast nor did he raise a sacrificial offering, he simply ordered his disciples to sit the people down to eat.

Fast forward from Christ to Rod Parsley and you will come face to face with a direct mail campaign that reads and feels more like a direct response pitch from a get rich quick real estate scheme. The contingencies are based on “If” you send money “You” will receive something from God. This terminology is at the core of the sowing and reaping scam that has sucked millions of dollars out of the pockets of faithful believers, all in the name of Jesus.

Listed below you will find the contents of an actual letter from Rod Parsley in its entirety. It is very important that you read this letter from top to bottom in order to witness the pitch unfold and how it finally ends with the send money now hook.

The Anatomy of a Pimp Letter

There are actually three vital areas to every pimp letter, but you will miss it if you fail to pay close attention to the intent of the content. I am not assuming that the entire Body of Christ is so naive that they cannot exercise proper discernment, but it is obvious that a percentage of us are still falling for these pimp letters. For this reason I have listed the three essentials of every pimp letter with prayers that you use your money to support real areas of need and not the greed of men like Rod Parsley.

Spiritual Greeting Many of the letters you will receive will actually start off really generic or even express concern for your current spiritual condition. In the case of the above letter from Parsley, he begins with a series of questions all designed to corral you into a corner of guilt or fear. In the example from Parsley you can clearly see that he uses questions concerning faith and fear in order to set the tone for the next section of a pimp letter, Twisted Doctrine.

Twisted DoctrineIt is in the twisted doctrine section of a pimp letter that you will encounter the unethical use of scriptures and vague church clichés in order to convince the believer that it is God’s will that they obey the content of this letter. In the pimp letter from Parsley, he has resulted to using an array of vague clichés in order to enforce his spiritual hierarchy over the mere mortals who will read the letter. For example:

“It is the dynamic outflow of God’s Supernatural power in your life—activated by your faith.”

The key term is “activated by your faith” which is actually the escape clause that gets Parsley off the hook if you were to give money, and nothing supernatural happens in your life. At the point that nothing happens in your life according to the letter, then it is still your fault because you didn’t have the proper amount of faith to cause God to move. Huh?

God Needs Your Money - The final and most disgusting part of a pimp letter is the insinuation that our God actually needs your money in order to do his job. When did God run out of money? According to this letter one could come away feeling like the God of Abraham is now broke and the spreading of the gospel is in jeopardy if I don’t sow a seed of $777.

For those of you who would defend this practice out of fear of using your common sense please allow me to introduce you to a concept that is never preached by prosperity pastors; God has no use for your money! The thought that you can get God to do something supernatural by sowing a "so-called seed" of $777 is not only ridiculous, but also an insult to our Lord.

Try This Instead

If you really want to move God or experience God then please try worshiping God. To worship God is totally free of charge and doesn’t even require group participation, just simply bow down right now, and try it.

The question that remains is why does Rod Parsley need some much money to do something that costs absolutely nothing to do? To minister the word of God is as simple as going to the local nursing home and holding a bible study for the residents. No television contract required for that!

So the next time you receive a letter from either Rod Parsley or Fred Price I ask that you send them the following response.

Dear Mr. Pastor Dude

Please do not send me another letter requesting that I support your ministries efforts around the world. I am not sure if you are aware of it or not but there exist ministry opportunities right here in New Orleans, Louisiana (insert your City here) that are being ignored while you fly over us in order to get to Uganda.

Since you believe in sowing and reaping so much then why not exercise your supernatural faith by sowing a seed into my light bill or mortgage?  My mortgage is $989, and according to your preaching on sowing, if you pay it then you (Mr. Preacher Dude) can expect a 100 fold blessing from God.

Since you preach giving then I think it will be an awesome display of your faith in what you’re preaching if you take this opportunity and pay my mortgage today! Don’t sit there in fear Mr. Pastor Dude, God is waiting on you to apply your faith with this seed offering as you witness the power of sowing a seed.

And if you sow this seed today into my mortgage I will also add you to my list of preachers who have signed up to be a covenant partner with my Child Support Payments.

Covenant preachers will receive a special message from me each month highlighting how my bills are getting paid because of their faith. So today Mr. Pastor Dude, I am asking you to do your part and make sure the storehouse is full as according to Malachi 3:10 which ask that we bring all of the tithes into the storehouse.

Try God Mr. Pastor and see if he will open up a window and pour you out a blessing because you have sowed your seed in fertile ground, which just happens to be my bills.

Yours Truly
